Location and Conference Address

The 11th Plinius Conference on Mediterranean Storms will be held at the historical building of the University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain, from 07 – 11 September 2009. The conference is organized by the University of Barcelona with support from the European Geosciences Union (EGU). The University of Barcelona was founded some 555 years ago. Its history is closely linked to the histories of both the city of Barcelona and Catalonia itself.

Catalonia is situated in the North-eastern part of Spain. The region is characterized by a Mediterranean climate. Most years experience one or more flash flood events that mainly affect population centres concentrated on the coast. A recent wind storm in January 2009 produced 8 casualties and more than €1M damage. Catalonia's complex topography and vegetation, along with its position in the Mediterranean region, results in other natural risks such as landslides, avalanches, droughts, forest fires, hailstorms and coastal erosion.

Tourism in Barcelona is an important feature throughout the year. During the first weeks of September, the weather is usually pleasant. Visitors often combine activities at the beach with visits to the city, shopping, recreation, etc. The modernism areas, with works of Gaudi, or the Gothic Quarter are some of the most visited places. The historical building of the University of Barcelona is 5 minutes from the Catalonia Square, in the Barcelona core. From this point, there is easy access by foot to the Port, the Cathedral, the Ramblas, or la Pedrera. Please note that 11 September is the National Catalan Day and is a holiday. For more information see the Conference web.
