Stakeholder Consultation:
Definition of a science-driven European scenario for space exploration
Room Paris, Monday, 18 September 2006, 19:30—21:-00

ESA asked the European Space Science Committee of the European Science Foundation (ESSC-ESF) to conduct the science part of a stakeholder consultation in support of the definition of a science-driven European scenario for space exploration. Three such scenarios (science-driven, industry/innovation-driven, institution-driven) will be evaluated in parallel, and their findings integrated by ESA. The strategy should be centered on the developments (scientific, technological or otherwise) that enable human spaceflight to Mars; the early Aurora scenario should be re-evaluated with that goal. The issue of the US lunar initiative has also to be examined in this context. A first consultation of limited extent was carried out by ESSC at ESA’s request prior to the ESA Ministerial Council at the end of 2005; for this second part of the evaluation the process will comprise a meeting of an ad hoc group during the first week of December, and a larger meeting at the beginning of 2007 in order to get a proper input from the relevant communities. In addition to these two meetings questionaires will be circulated and the steering group for this exercise will use the opportunity of other events to discuss with the scientific community and gather their contribution and input. This is the purpose of this special event during the EUROPLANET Assembly.
